Yup, I’ve been there.
I’ve been an Executive Director of an educational nonprofit for the last twelve years in New York City and learned the business through trial and error. On day one, they handed me the keys, set up my email account and wished me well. Truly, my first day on the job, I Googled “How to fundraise for a nonprofit.”
12 years later, I had built a multi-million dollar nonprofit organization with a talented staff, dedicated board, strong program outcomes, passionate donors and a great reputation in the community. I had even learned how to do it without losing my sanity and working 90 hours a week.
During my time as Executive Director of Breakthrough New York, I oversaw hiring, onboarding, managing and leading of staff. I scaled up and 10x’ed the number of clients served and our fundraising.
Since then, I’ve become a fanatic about helping nonprofits to become healthy, thriving environments where people can grow, learn and bring their whole selves while making the world a better place without burning out.
